I was asked why I don’t review or take a look at Cinebook releases any more?  Well, the simple reason is that I don’t get anything new from Cinebook!

We cannot force publishers to submit review items so it’s all down to when I get time to search and then it’s a case of if I have enough time to put something together.

Charlton Modern Imprint?

moderncomics3.jpg

The wonderful Ramon Shenk, whose name should be familiar to anyone who is a comics buff [or officianado if you prefer],comes up with all sorts of interesting items. Few stump me but I’ll admit that Modern Comics is a new one on me!

As far as I know,as a collector of Charlton Comics since the 1960s,the Modern Comics imprint never got into the UK.  I’ve certainly not seen any when checking the dealer boxes out at the yearly Comic Expo [it’s in Bristol,in May in case you had no idea!].

Ramon has reproduced an article from The Charlton Spotlight magazine by its Editor,Mike Ambrose.  Well worth checking out at:

This link will also get you to the rest of Ramon’s web site and you should enjoy it!

-well worth checking out- provides us with the following -THANKS,Rafiq!

muthu_308.jpg

Muthu - #308 - John Steel - April ‘08

Prakash Publishers shook me out of my own imposed hibernation, and surprised me (and I believe everyone) with the next release of Muthu Comics #308, featuring John Steel in a mystery filled two stories titled Kathai Sollum Kolaigal  and Karuppu Vattam .  It’s been a long time I read two quality detective comics, and what more when you get classics from 1960’s.  The Cover Art seems to have been shooted away from a Johnny Nero story, I wonder aren’t there any Original Cover arts for John Steel, which could have been more suitable for a first issue devoted completely to him?  But, the cover art is real stunning, so the oddity is acceptable.

This edition marks a come back for Muthu, with the last issue (#307) releasing way back in September last year.  Editor easily didn’t even mention about the delay this time, as it seem to have become a tradition with the publication, and he seems to take pride in continuing the saga.  This time around, there are announcements for more than 5 detective stories in the line-up this year, but I am not hopeful enough for Mr. Vijayan keeping up the promise.

Since it’s a detective storyline, I will post my reviews little late, in order to not play spoilsport to the suspense.  Meanwhile enjoy the Cover Scans, and Other features, and do post in your reviews.

lion.jpg

Lion - #202 - Lucky Luke

Prakash Publishers another flagship brand, Lion Comics, makes it return with Issue #202 this month.  Featuring our favorite cowboy Lucky Luke in “Merke Oru Maamannar”, Multi-color saga promises to be another classic Lucky Luke stories, where Lucky tries to save an American city from a puppet millionaire, calling himself as the King of USA. A hilarious tale for which the Man who shoots faster than his own Shadow, is known for. Release of Lion Comics and Comics Classics from Prakash Publishers at the same month, shows a promising start to the new year for the legendary publishing house from

South India.

The paper quality though is a worrying factor.  I don’t remember a Lucky Luke issue being printed in a sub-standard paper for a long time.  That has discredited the usually stunning artwork in color.  Seems, editor has used the same paper which is used for printing the black and white stories.  After witnessing the high quality Lucky Luke series released by Tara Press recently, this brings us back to the sub-standard at which Tamil Comics Industry still lingers at.  Hope it changes for better.

Random Thoughts?

maeve001.jpg

It’s amazing at how easily you can be ripped off in the comics business.

I was in touch with an Indian [that’s from the Indian sub-continent] publisher who was a big fan of certain old British comic characters. I mentioned a team-up strip of two characters that he had not seen before and I offered to send a scanned copy to him.  He was very greatful.

I heard nothing back.

A month later the strip was being offered to buyers of his companys books as an exclusive “special”!!

I did a lot of work for Indian companies who wanted new characters in new stories set in India that would up-date their look and image.  About 120pp in total for three companies.  That’s the last I heard –and I hear that some of this work may have been published but if it has,not seen it.  Not been paid for it.

But India is a hard country to pursue a company legally.

Europe you might think would be easier?

Ohhhh no!

Along with the late Art Wetherell I produced a best selling 4 issue mini series for Eros Comics.

This was reprinted a number of times and the graphic novel version ditto. I’m onlu now finding out to what extent “illegal” copies have been produced in French [for France and Quebec],Spanish and lords knows how many other languages!

If you read this and know of any foreign language [non English] versions of,deep breath,”Two Hot Girls” please let me know!

The follow-up,featuring the two characters from 2 Hot Girls, was title Maeve. I’m told there are non English editions but without knowing how the book has been re-titled,searching could take years.

Now,based on the editions I know of and sales I’ve heard of through contacts,I,Art and Maeve’s artist,David Gordon, have lost a good few thousand £/$ each.

Here’s a scoop!  Eros were supposed to publish the trilogy but Two Girls went out in 1991 and Maeve not until 1997.  The third part explained all that had been going on –yes, the series was popular because it did have a story!- but no interest from Eros.  The deal was:get an artist to draw 180-200pp for nothing then, and only then, would a decision be made as to whether it would be accepted –but only at 1991 contract rates!!

So,no explaining final book.

Until now.

Yes,I will be writing and drawing the final part of the trilogy –possible title:”Shafts In Time –End Game”.  Yep,then I just have to find a publisher!

And the 1984 “classic” Outlaws Of The Urban Forest, inspiration for Brown & Northall’s Outlaws 2540,is going to be redrawn and released!

Shafts In Time and Outlaws Of The Urban Forest will be major projects with some relief provided by other projects and, hopefully,Maakika artwork.

Between this –CBO!

And I’d still like to hear your thoughts on what you read here!

Stan Sakai:No To WOTI?

war_of_the_independents.jpg

War Of The Independents

Just waiting to hear back from Dave Ryan but,as you’ll note on the WOTI item yesterday, there is a comment from “Steve”.  According to the Usagi Yojimbo forum:

“Update: Sunday, Jan. 13th, 2008: Stanley Sakai has generously included Usagi Yojimbo to the War. Keep an eye out for a possible cover from him on issue 3 as well as Usagi Yojimbo in that issue.”

However, same forum,Sun Apr 06, 2008 13:14 +0000,Stan Sakai writes:

“Unfortunately, I will not be contributing to this project .”

So,I’m unsure whether this means no Sakai cover or Usagi Yojimbo will not be used in the series.

Time will tell!
