Eriko and her friends are up to their usual antics terrorizing the teachers, starting pillow fights, buying up weird souvenirs for their friends and families, and having late night sleepovers snacking and reminiscing about their hilariously silly pasts. Prepare to laugh your socks off in this awesomely hysterical and side-splitting conclusion to the High School Girls series!

 

 

Herm. When you’ve reached 50 years of age you do worry when you get a book titled “High School Girls” in your mail!

 

 

This is the first volume I’ve seen and,sadly,the final volume in the series! However,it didn’t stop my enjoyment of reading about High School Girls exercising,in their underwear and…nuts! 

Anyway,it really is a fun read and I have to wonder whether the rather narcissistic teacher Yuichiro Odagiri might be,well,gay?  Or just in love with himself!  Certainly spends a lot of time flexing his muscles!

 

 

Back to the girls,though.

 

 

I loved “Nude Bra” and “Nude Bra Continued” and then there is the male inspired “Fantasy” –all those girls sharing rooms,heh?  See what it’s really like!  And “Last Resort” cracked me up!  Seriously,if you are from a female dominated family you’ll see things you may have seen at home but never realised it happened world-wide!

 

 

Really enjoyed Towa’s work and there is an official web site but,sadly,it’s in Japanese. You’ll have a smile on your face when you see the images there –guaranteed!

JUNK –Record Of The Last Hero 6

Hiro goes back to school to begin a fresh start in his life… or so he thought, until his JUNK counselor becomes his new homeroom teacher! As the third JUNK’s terror escalates, a new and more powerful JUNK sent by JUNK Systems appears and is set on punishing the third JUNK. While a cult called Kofukukai reaches out to the fear ridden citizens of  Tokyo with evil intentions behind thier “goodwill.”

Some will recall that when I started reviewing Junk  initially,with volume 4 I believe,I was a little “so-so” about it. Kia writes that:

”I’ve written JUNK as the last hero series I will ever write. However,that decision isn’t up to me,but rather depends on how readers feel about it.”

And goes on to add:

“The story is finally moving towards its conclusion.  When it’s finished,I would like it if you could re-read this series called JUNK in one sitting,from start to finish.  That’s my hope.”

Normally you might think “So? Your last book. Fair enough”.  But not in this case. Junk is the first book by Kia Asamiya that I have seen and read.  I ought to fairly credit his art assistants –Naoki Hyodoh,Nobuaki Takano,Jun Kaneko and Takeshi Ohnishi. 

 

 

Asamiya is called “Japan’s flag-bearer  of sci-fi comics for boys and girls” and it is a title richly deserved.

Everything in the Junk storyline seems to be set on its final inevitable course –the fate of Red Junk;revelations as to what the suits are and who is behind them;terrorist strikes at major Japanese cities and the really creepy Koufukukai increase their activities almost in an “Invasion Of The Body-Snatchers” way.

I really am ticked off that I have not read 1-3 because if there was one series that I would recommend it is Junk.  It is a classic that deserves far more attention than it is getting.

I wonder whether Asamiya’s anime,under his real name of Michitaka Kikuchi,is as good as his Manga work?!

If I had to award this stars out of ten I’d give 12!!

The 10th King of Fighters semi-finals officially begin with Team K’ vs. The High School Girls Team on top of the zooming “Highway Star Express.” However, their match is unexpectedly interrupted by the former leader of NESTS’ research department, the Phantom Pain-Kirameki Kannaduki, who suddenly attacks K’. What will happen to K’… On the other end of the world, on a sailboat on the

Nile River, the second battle of the semi-finals is taking place - Hero Team vs Wolf Team. Shen-Woo vs.Terry Bogard begin the incredible battle between the two highly-skilled teams. Both fighters pull out all they have for battle, and despite the unexpected result, the sensational combat touches the whole world.

 

 

Ahh,back in my even more enjoyable echelon of Hong Kong Manhua.  The two authors we know the names of but,sadly,all we know about “Production Artist” is that it’s the DGN Production studion.

 

 

There are the Special Move “call outs” such as:”Second Shoot”;”Black Out”;”Guard Cancel” and “Blow Away Attack” –I LOVE this!  A great cover with some incredible artwork and fantastic characters –of whom Ash Crimson has to be the hottest [remembering that this is just a drawing!].

 

 

These books,and,yes,annoyed I’ve not seen vol.1-3,are of the best production quality –what we expect from Dr Master Publications.  The contents are such that any fan of fantasy or super heroes ought to get a kick out of –there is more enjoyment in one of these books for me than a stack of Marvels or DCs.

 

 

However,the UKs biggest chainstore,Forbidden Planet,tell me they do not get Dr Master books!!!  Incredible.  Manga,Manga everywhere but not a Dr Master to see! I really do think that the company has to make a big push of its profile in the UK –and

Europe? 

 

Will I stop in my efforts to promote and tell everyone about Dr Master books? Can I be stopped?  To quote Rose in this book:

 

“Impossible..impossible..I can’t be defeated”!!!

Ditko Looked Up

Ahh,Steve Ditko.  One of a kind.  But less of my opinion.  This in from Blake Bell:

Great Win For Siegel Estate

“This is the big one. The judge has issued a ruling in the case regarding the Siegel family’s rights in Superman. It doesn’t resolve all the issues–for example, this does not address the Superboy issue, which is a separate case. However, it does award the heirs copyright in the Superman material in Action Comics number 1 (the judge uses the term “Vol. 1″, but that’s only a reference to the first issue.). 

Here’s the stirring conclusion: 

After seventy years, Jerome Siegel’s heirs regain what he granted so long ago – the copyright in the Superman material that was published in Action Comics Vol. 1. What remains is an apportionment of profits, guided in some measure by the rulings contained in this Order, and a trial on whether to include the profits generated by DC Comics’ corporate sibling’s exploitation of the Superman copyright. If you read the opinion, you’ll note a number of references to the treatise on copyright written by William Patry. Patry, now Google’s legal counsel, offers a crisp write-up of the opinion on his blog, along with an homage to Jewish comic book creators of the golden age. The key takeaway from a legal perspective is the following: 

The dramatic sounding nature of the final paragraph of the opinion has to be put in context though. The opinion doesn’t cover Schuster’s interests, which are not subject to Section 304(c) termination, but rather a future 304(d) termination. Nor does the opinion reach the work for hire question for anything after the (justly famous and important) Action Comics Vol. 1 published on April 18, 1938 – the collateral estoppel applied on work for hire only covers Action Comics Vol. 1. Finally, there are very thorny issues of apportionment. All of these issues are likely to be the subject of subsequent motions and possibly trial.

 

Still, despite its limited scope and remaining unfinished details, this is a historic ruling rich with symbolic significance. And in a poignant coincidence, the judge issued his order on the same day that Grant Morrison’s homage to Siegel and Shuster in All Star Superman #10 hit the stands”

LULU AWARDS MOVING TO NEW YORK CITY FOR 2008, WITH THE HELP OF MOCCA,IDW, DC COMICS AND ARCHIE COMICS 

Friends of Lulu is moving the organization’s Lulu Awards event from the San Diego Comic-Con to the popular MoCCA Art Festival (aka Artfest) this year! 

The annual Lulu Awards, which recognize the efforts women make in comics, will be held at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in

Manhattan on Saturday, June 7 at 8:30 p.m.. Light refreshments will be served, and there will be a suggested donation of $7.00 at the door. 

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, along with

IDW, DC Comics and Archie Comics, is sponsoring this major event. 

“We are excited to bring an award event to MoCCA Artfest, and just as excited not to be competing with the multitude of great events at San Diego Comic-Con this July. We are able to reach a larger group of people eager to see wonderful creators recognized for their hard work in this field,” Treasurer Marion Vitus notes. 

On the schedule to present awards are the previous years’ award winners, including Rachel Nabors and Abby Denson, and on the roster to emcee the event is Lulu Eightball creator Emily Flake.

Matt Brooker Speaks From…1990!!

He’s Talented!

He’s Quite Mysterious [no,really]!

He is the Comic Genius known as….

MATT [DIsraeli]  BROOKER! 

I first came across a mysterious artistic genius named Matt Brooker through a publication titled Hardware –the often strange creation of Andrew Yoxall and Shane Oakley. 

It was one of Matt’s “D’Israeli” stories –a quirky take on A Fistful Of Dollars.  Big Ben Dilworth on a visit to Bristol said to me “If you liked that you’ll love Matt’s Bum!”  The “Bum” Dilworth referred to was,naturally,Bum Comic published by Dan Rickwood and Andrew Thomas.  The strip was “The Amateur Vivisectionist” starring a rather nasty South African gent by the name of Eldritch Pule. 

I was hooked.

 

 

Like John Erasmus,I was stumped as to why Matt was not working in mainstream comics and his colour work was –and is- superb.  I believe Dilworth and I were the first to ever interview Matt in Zine Zone…in 1988? Ye gods the years go by!

 

 

When I was writing features for MU Press and its Comics Fx newspaper I phoned editor Hal Hargitt in Seattle and told him all about Matt and that,since he had been mentioned in the “UK Invasion” issue,he deserved a full interview.  “Okay. Do it” I was told.  So I did.

Before a new interview is presented to you dear CBOers,I thought it would be a treat to look back to July 1990 and that CF/X interview.  So,with the classic beat of Gene Chandler’s “Tower Strength” in the background,let’s take a trip.

 

A trip in time…

Terry:Matt,you’ve been a very busy boy since you were interviewed for Zine Zone a couple years back.  Can you up-date us on what you’ve done since then?

 

 

Matt: Hmm. Let’s see…Since then I’ve really started building a professional career. I suppose the first commercially viable work I did was for your directory comic,Preview.  The first strip I did for you,”Englishman Abroad”,is going into Fly In My Eye.

Those first strips got me work from Escape,Heartbreak Hotel,and a humour magazine called The Truth.  The Escape strip was never published by them but has just appeared in the horror magazine Shriek of all places.

 

 

From there I was picked up by Fleetway for Third World War,then by DC,and dropped by both of them.  Finally I found my place doing “Timulo” for Deadline.

 

 

And then I landed Mr X.

 

 

There are also piles of things  I’ve done which have fallen through..these include being artist on Saga Of The Man Elf before

Neptune picked it up..two separate Grendel projects –one of which may still go ahead,one of which Phil Bond is doing. That’s not to mention the Grendel story I’ve just done for A1 plus a project that’s still in the pipeline.

Terry: hmm. The issue of Crisis you worked on:I believe you were asked to redraw this strip but still weren’t too happy with the first few pages –can you tell us why?

 

 

Matt: I wasn’t too happy with most of it.

 

Basically,I’d never worked in colour,I’d never had to work so fast,and I couldn’t draw the main character.

 

In the end,the work I produced had nothing of me in it.  Rather than being printed up and distributed all over the country,it should have been given a quiet burial in an unmarked grave at midnight.

 

 

 

Terry: How were you approached for that strip –and how come they didn’t pick up on someone with your talent for more work?

 

 

Matt: I had approached Pat Mills with my work some months previously,and it was his recommendation to Steve McManus which got me the job.

 

 

I think the reason they never asked me for more work is because they want “realistic” artists whereas I’m more at home with more off-the-wall,cartoony material.

 

 

Terry: Presumably,a “quiet” period followed this?

 

 

Matt: Oddly,no…I spent about a month re-assessing my work,and then in December,two things happened.

 

 

One,I met Steve [Dillon] and Brett [Ewing] from Deadline,which led to the creation of “Timulo”,and I was also offered the inking job on Hellblazer through Mark Buckingham,who’s a friend of mine.

We did one issue in a hurry,because the book was getting behind schedule. 

In January,Karen Berger fired me “for using too much black”.  She then re-scheduled the book and got Alfredo Alcala to re-ink over my inks.

 

The result looks much the same.

 

 

That was,I think,issue #18,the first issue Mark Buckingham pencilled.  The experience did me good anyway. 

Up to then,I’d been trying to second-guess editors,to alter my style to fit whoever I’m working for.  Now I just work to suit myself,and f*** you if you don’t like it!

 

 

Oddly enough,I’ve been getting more work since I adopted that attitude.

Terry: Can you tell how you got the job on Mr X,replacing Shane Oakley?

 

 

Matt:In August,1988 Neil Gaiman rang me to tell me that Bill Marks was re-launching Mr X  and that he [Gaiman] had recommended both Shane and myself for the job. 

I rang Shane with the news,and it took me about an hour to convince him that it wasn’t a practical joke!

 

 

So,we both sent our samples in,and I’m told that we were the toptwo on Bill’s short-list of pencillers.  Bill opted for Shane,in the end,and I went on to other things.

 

 

In April,1989,Shane rang me to say that he was behind with Mr X and that he and Bill had discussed using me as a fill-in artist for two issues if he didn’t catch up soon.  In the end,he didn’t.  I came in as a fill-in artist,but by the time I’d finished my two issues Shane still hadn’t caught up,so I was offered a permanent job as penciller,which I accepted.

 

 

The whole change-over passed without acrimony,and Shane and I are still friends.

Terry: Shane landed the pencilling chores on Mr X but didn’t get the chance to ink himself.  It seems that the regular inker is trying to keep some form of continuity in the work –the pencils you sent me for Mr X were great but seemed to lose something when inked by someone else.  Are you happy with the way it’s turned out?

 

 

Matt: I’d seen Ken Holewczynski’s inks on Shane’s work compared to photocopies of the original pencils.  I know Shane kept Ken on a very tight rein,trying to get Ken to ink as close to his [Shane’s] style as he could.

 

 

When I started work on X,I had some idea what Ken would do for my work,and just told him to work as he saw fit.

 

 

I like the idea that it’s a collaboration,not just “Ken-inking-Matt”.

Some people have said that the work “loses detail” when inked;that’s not true..I think it comes from the fact that I do rather loose pencils,which suggest that there’s more there than there is.

Also,I find it very hard to judge what an ink drawing will look like from the pencils.  I quite often alter things during inking because of  that.  And for myself,I rarely indicate shadows or rendering when pencilling.  All that is added during inking.

 

 

So when I have to do all that on the pencils,I make mistakes.  90% of the faults on Mr X issues 7 & 8 are down to me,not Ken.

 

 

Terry: Tell me,Matt,in issue #7 you had the old pot of fishpaste hidden,as in all your work –will it be seen again?

 

 

Matt: YES!!

Terry: Trivialities aside:you’ve managed to get a portrait of Shane and yourself into Mr X #7. Is the writer giving you leeway on panel contents,or are these inclusions exceptions?

 

 

Matt: What’s so trivial about fishpaste?!

 

 

Seriously,the Jeffrey Morgan scripts are more-or-less dialogue only,like stage scripts,and panel breakdowns are left to me.  Bill usually indicates page breakdowns on the script  but I’m fairly free to change those.

The only time I ever had to make any changes in the 124 pages I’ve drawn so far is when I had to re-do two pages of issue #11 because I’d been sent the wrong version of the script –those two pages were different in the final version.

 

 

Terry: Mr X meets God in the 7th issue,do you know how the story will develop or are you kept in the dark?

 

 

Matt: I usually receive scripts in ones or twos,so I never know beyond that how the stories develop.  It’s nice in a way…I get the chance to look forward to the next issue even though I’m working on it.

Terry: I see you’ve done a colour cover –are you doing these for each issue?

 

 

Matt: Up to now,there has been a different cover artist for each issue…I think Bill now plans to have one artist do a series of covers,in the way they do on Lone Wolf And Cub.  I’m going to send in some roughs for covers,but I’ll be competing with other artists.  I don’t automatically get to do covers.

 

Terry: Pity. A nosey,but interesting question none-the-less:what are the page rates for Mr X?

 

 

Matt: I get $80.00 per page for pencils,which works out at £40-50 depending on the exchange rates.  I get paid 50% on delivery of artwork and 50% on publication.

 

 

Terry: You’ve signed up for six issues.  Do you know if you’ll be doing more?

 

 

Matt: I’m not signed for a fixed number of issues…So far I’ve done six and I’m awaiting another three-issue story.  Bill seems happy with my work and I enjoy working on X.  I would like to do at least a year’s worth [12 issues] of X.

 

 

Terry: Mr X must keep you busy but any major/solo projects planned for the near future?

 

 

Matt: Oh,definitely…Apart from my regular work on “Timulo”,I’m working on a project with Shane called Fatal Charm ,which is a sort of “Looney Tunes” adventure we’ve been working on for some time…

As I said earlier,there are two Grendel projects in the pipeline,and I’m working up a proposal for a graphic novel in which Piranha Press is interested.  Beyond that,I have other projects which are still being agreed with publishers,and plans for further collaborations with Shane.

SAN JOSE, CA – March, 2008 – DrMaster Publications has announced the impending release of three new titles, Mamoru the Shadow Protector by Sai Madara & Taro Achi, Nephylym by Rei Kusakabe, and

Feng Shui Academy by Haruka Shouji.

 

 

 

Mamoru the Shadow Protector is the manga adaptation of the popular Japanese novel and anime, Kage Kara Mamoru by Taro Achi.

Feng Shui Academy is also a manga adaptation of a Japanese novel series, Fuu Sui Gakuen by Midori Natsu. Nephylym is a new Japanese manga series by the up-and-coming manga artist Rei Kusakabe. Both Mamoru the Shadow Protector and Nephylym will hit stores this summer! Brace yourselves for all the hilarious adventures in store for you!

 

 

 

Mamoru the Shadow Protector

 

 

A story about protecting someone you love… in secret. Mamoru Kagemori is a dull high school boy who’s not handsome, athletic, or intelligent. But things aren’t always what they appear. He is actually the eldest son of the 400-year-old Ninja clan specializing in protecting their neighbors, the Konnyaku’s. And the object of Mamoru’s protection is none other than their only daughter, Yuna Konnyaku, a natural born accident-prone troublemaker. Mamoru must continue to protect her and carry out his duty regardless of how strong, bizarre, or stupid his advisories are. Will Yuna ever learn who her brave protector is?

 

 

 

 

Nephylym

 

 

Shun is has a unique power to electrically charge metal materials. A mysterious winged angel-like being named Ale picks up on his powers and chooses him to become her partner, thus enhancing Shun’s powers. The next day, Shin’s classmate, Sanari, who he has a crush on, tells him that she also has a winged angel partner, named Blissful. These beings are called Nephylyms. Sanari tells Shin that people like them, who have Nephylyms are called Answerers, and they are tasked to purify the crystals of negative consciousness called Noir. Together with their nephylyms Shun, Sanari, and Tsukasa (Shun’s rival in love) battle against Noirsthat possesses human beings.

 

 

 

Feng Shui Academy

 

 

Ozunu is the top student at Kusanagi School of Magical Architecture, a national polytechnic high school dedicated to raising professional magical architects of the future. Their job is to apply feng shui and other spiritual methods in architecture to exterminate fiends and demons in

Tokyo, where the protective feng shui seal has been broken due to wars and urban development. Being raised by a spider fiend, Ozunu has always tried to purify or return monsters to where they came from. He clashes with his rival Tsugaru, the heir to a magical architecture corporation, who believes strength is the key to everything. 

  

Availability

 

Mamoru the Shadow Protector will be available June 2008.

 

Nephylym will be available September 2008.

 

Feng Shui Academy will be released in 2009.

The first time in Singapore! A debut contest for cartoonists!

77 Star will hold “The First Challenging Drawing Contest for Cartoonists in Singapore” to be debuted in the Japanese Market! This event is tied up with “Shueisha”, a company that publishes “Shukan Shonen Jump” which features “NARUTO”, “BLEACH” and others.

Everyone can participate in this contest, regardless of being amateur or professional.

Terms and Conditions:

Applicants must be living in

Singapore and above 13 years old. Any nationality is welcomed.

No restriction for professionals nor amateurs.

Manuscript paper size: length: 330-365 mm; breadth: 230-260 mm; Standard frame: length: 270mm and breadth: 180mm; the paper size is 1.2 times the usual size of comic magazine.

* The exact number of pages: story cartoon: 31 pages; comedy cartoon: 15 pages.

 -please adhere to the exact number of pages, nothing more or less.

 -the original script is non-returnable, so please make a copy for yourself for retention.

Besides the comic manuscript paper, please also provide the storyline as an attachment, preferably in Japanese language if possible.
