A Teaser!

Posted by admin On May - 1 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

I’ll be putting up a “Last Week” up-date on the Comic Expo about Tuesday.

I’ve been in touch with Dave Ryan of War Of The Independents fame and arranged an interview with him once his home move is complete.

I’ll also be doing a review of Hybrid Bastards #2 which Katie kindly sent me -along with a GORGEOUS piece of original art from the book!

A few other things that I’ve got lined up but it’s all being kept quiet for now.

One question I keep getting asked is why I do not include my own work and projects here.  Well,I do have my own art site and a nice spot over at Comic Space.  The purpose of this site is not self-promotion.

That said,I thought I would offer a very brief teaser on two projects -one is fairly well known:The Supernaturals.  This was the strip I created to replace a comic Fleetway lost copyright to.

So here you go…

para018.jpg

para023.jpg

The other page is from a little “Preview” project that leads into a mini series.  The strip is titled “Words Between Worlds” -this is unfinished/un-lettered art so kind of raw.

cbop1.jpg

There -happy now?  Next I’ll be showing off some of Paul Brown’s Outlaws 4025 artwork!

Be happy.

New CBO Staffers

Posted by admin On May - 1 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

CBO would like to introduce two new staffers who will deal with interviews and reviews.

First up is Billy ‘13″ C’ Goldbrick Jnr.  CBO asked Billy how he saw his CBO duties:

“Word, dawg. Some ****** ******* bro tries t’ ********* tippy-toe up mah crib t’ ******** deisrespect m’ho goddamn if’n the **** ain’t gonna get slapped upside th’ head.  Suck this! Word”

No idea what it means but -well said, sir!

mike-jones.jpg

“Get outta m’face,bitch!”

Jimmy “Jack-Knife” Pomparini when asked how he’d tackle hard interviewees or criticism over questioning remarked:No One argues.  Meat-hook” ?

Jimmy worked at Stupidly Blatant Comics where many staffers simply disappeared and I asked Jimmy whether this was due to editorial policies?  Jimmy responded with “I take the Fourth” -which I have no idea about unless he wants the fourth interview I’ve lined up for May?

Jimmy and Billy will be at the Comic Expo and both said they were looking forward to “Coming to mutually beneficial deals with publishers and dealers”.

Inspirational!

Welcome lads.

The Perhapanauts #1

story TODD DEZAGO,

art & cover CRAIG ROUSSEAU,

variant cover ARTHUR ADAMS

32 PAGES, FC, $3.50

“TRIANGLE,” Part One

The official debut of the all-new on-going series from Image! A new storyline begins as the PERHAPANAUTS delve deeper into the Bermuda Triangle to rescue Karl from the Mothman Tribunal! As the team prepares to battle these Angels of Doom, they are separated and cast into the unpredictable and unfathomable Perhaps! Will they ever get out…?! Back at Bedlam, Arisa is confronted by her past and Choopie is crowned King of the Gremlins. Yes, really.

The annual that seems to have started this series I missed  –standing order with Forbidden Planet explains that.

I did really want to avoid reviewing this simply because it looks very similar to one of my own projects.  However,I made the mistake of asking Mr Brown to review and he and Darron Northall seem far more interested in

South Park cartoons, why Aquaman had a solid water hand at one point and internet sex sites.  Seriously.  No kidding. So,I fired both of them as they protested that they didn’t even know that I employed them!

Let’s cut a long story short.

If you know anything about paranormal phenomena or Creatures On The Outer Edge, this book will make so much sense to you.  It did to me.  Chupacabras,Mothman –or,rather,Mothmen- Sasquatch and more.  This book has the lot and the art by Craig Rousseau is very nice and the colour work of Rico Renzi adds to the overall feel and look.

Todd DeZago’s story is fine.  I might have understood things more if I’d gotten that first book but as Merlin the Mystic once said to me:”Why cry over a Man-root when it’s milk will send you?”  I think that is very relevant!

I’d recommend The Perhapanauts because it is a fun read.

Septic Isle

Writer:Andy Winter

Artist:Mick Trimble

The book: The 52-page perfect-bound title has a full-colour cover and black and white interior artwork. An exclusive limited edition first printing of just 100 copies will be available at the Bristol Expo, priced £3.95.

Hmm.  Another one Mr Brown should have reviewed but, apart from his Aquaman-water hand fixation the poor love has been working hard on his exhibition pieces for the

South Bank Art Trail [same date as the Expo!].

There’s a nice dedication to the late James Redington, who’ll be missed at the Expo.

You may recall that Adam Winter was the man behind Blood Psi which I reviewed here: http://www.comicbitsonline.com/2007/07/26/moonface-press/   and I had wondered what his collaboration with Mick Trimble might look like.   The story is this:

“In the ’70s and ’80s, Jacob Marley was MI5’s most revered and feared agent. But he turned his back on Queen and country to pursue a more peaceful existence. Now, 15 years later and with his life collapsing around him, Marley has returned to find that the world of British espionage is more dangerous than ever before.

Ageing, heartbroken and off his game, Marley must now face off against Jerome Quinn. A former MI5 man himself, Quinn leads Odin’s Sword, a neo-Nazi terror organisation that has declared war on

Britain’s Muslim community. He’s every bit as ruthless as Marley, only younger, stronger and smarter.

To beat him, Marley will need every shred of courage and cunning at his disposal – and it still might not be enough…”

You could say,if you were old enough, like me,that this story has elements of the TV series/books featuring the character Callan [starring Edward Woodward] and even The Professionals.  Or even my life story [heh!]  It is an interesting read and thankfully veered away from the James Bond influence it was to initially have –there is a “Coming Soon” ad inside that shows this influence.

There are,in Mick’s artwork, certain things that do stick out like a sore thumb in places but this is 52 pages and when I read the book initially I blocked out those flaws as they never really detracted from the story and the overall feel of the book. Mick’s character sketches printed in the book look great and some might say “find an inker”.  However,I will NOT.  I was lucky to have Ben Dilworth and John Britton to ink some of my early work but it was only as I had to do my own inking over virtually non-existent pencils that I saw my flaws and developed.  I think Mick should ink his own work and,as he’s still young,he’ll improve and develop.

I enjoyed the story and art and if you get a chance to buy a copy –DO!  And if you go to the Expo say “Hi” to the guys.
