You know,it must have been around 1971 that Summer time TV on ITV entertained us with nice programmes during the holidays.  The Franco-Belgian Robinson Crusoe,The Flashing Blade and so on.

One programme I recalled, but could never find anyone else who remembered it was Phoenix 5.  I loved it!

And like Raumpatrouille Orion, this series pre-dated Star Trek…very long story but an EXCELLENT site looking at Australian TV has a whole page dedicated to it!

http://www.classicaustraliantv.com/phx5.htm

And,if you can get German TV on the internet check out 3Sat which has the Raumpatrouille “movie” showing,I think, thiscoming Wednesday..anyone recording it,please? [Not that I approve of that sort of thing!]

BBC4 Steve Ditko documentary -YouTube

Posted by admin On September - 22 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

Imagine my shock when I learned that the BBC4 documentary in which Jonathan Ross goes in search of his hero,Steve Ditko, was on YouTube.

This is outrageous!  People who are not in the UK can now see this programme in top quality via the internet.  Mark Evanier has even configured his player so you can watch the whole programme!

Absolutely outrageous!!  Do what I did:go to the site and watch anddownload.  You can then sit back and bitch about people who have uploaded and made these programmesavailable for all!!

uuuhhh…anyone got the Comics Britannia or Herge documentary from thisseries on BBC4?  I’d love to rage against such terrible uploading crimes!

Comic Britannia

Posted by admin On September - 10 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

Joe Gordon over at Forbidden Planets Blog just posted this to Eurocomics [http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/eurocomics]:

“Hi, guys,

We’ve got a rare treat beginning tonight on British TV - a seasonon comics, which kicks off at 9pm tonight on BBC4 with the first partof Comics Britannia, a three-part series of one hour episodes lookingat different parts of British comics culture, starting with the launchof the Beano and Dandy in 1937 and coming right up to Alan Moorediscussing V for Vendetta and Lost Girls in the third episode. I’vehad an advance look at the series and posted a review (or preview Isuppose) on the FPI blog (http://forbiddenpla net.co.uk/ blog/?p=5031)along with a short Q&A with the series producer/director.

The legendary Leo Baxendale, creator of the Bash Street Kids andMinnie the Minx among many others, is featured heavily in tonight’sepisode, which is a special treat - Leo shared some of this thoughtson being involved in the show with me and kindly gave permission tostick them up on the blog too

(http://forbiddenpla net.co.uk/ blog/?p=5047).

The BBC has a site up to support the season (which will also include more comics shows such as one on Modesty Blaise and another on Steve Ditko) here:

http://www.bbc. co.uk/bbcfour/ comicsbritannia/ .

The BBC site also has video clips of Leo and Alan Moore you can watch as well as art and details of the shows. Several hours dedicated to comics, well done the BBC!

Joe”

RAUMPATROUILLE ORION!!

I must have been around 9 or 10 years old when I saw Raumpatrouille on

a dilapidated black and white [let’s say “blacky brown and white!”]

TV in Dalborn,Germany. So I had fairly vague memories of some of the

episodes. However,as a 20 something I still had a,uh,crush on Eva Pflug

-actress,singer and all round “well fit” lady! So when I saw a couple of her

LP records I bought ‘em!

The series was never shown in the UK or USA,though I thought it had

[then, until coming back to the UK I thought Felix The Cat,Laurel & Hardy

and even Rawhide were German tv shows!]. I think I may have some of the

German strips from LUPO on disc -I’ll have to check. There was,it seems,

a badly English sub-titled dvd out at one point and in 2003[?] a movie length

compilation.

I thought for years that only I remembered the series. But no!!!

Carol McCloud asked on the Eurocomics group some time ago:

“Does anyone know of any comics based on the 1960’s German SF TV show
Raumpatrouille (sometimes called Raumschiff Orion)?”

I asked around and……
” ‘Mick Baxter’ over at Comic Hauptforum provided these links”

And while I was still trying to find a German language version,Daniel Dickholtz came up with this, bless him!

Here’s the five-page story from Hungary! Please note that while the actors’ likenesses are on target, a lot of the production design isn’t. Why they decided to use the pod from 2001 instead of one of the Orion’s lancets is anybody’s guess…

Of course no artist can ever do justice to Eva Pflug [I think I still have one of her LP records in a cupboard! Great singer]. sigh

WATCHMEN -The Movie!

Posted by admin On September - 2 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

watch.jpg

Well,it may have taken over twenty years but it looks like the movie based on the comic series WATCHMEN,written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons with superb colouring by John Higgins,is going to be made.

Back in the 1980s magazines and fanzines, including Paul Birch’s FANTAZIA,reported on the rumours of where the film was being made -who the director was-who was going to star as whom and so on. Never happened.

Cool being old enough to remember all this until it dawns on you your life span is getting shorter!

September,2007:Vancouver,Canada,is when filming is due to start. Only actor I know from the almost unknown cast is Jeffery Dean Morgan -who plays the father of the two heroes in SUPERNATURAL.

In case you didn’t know;Dick Giordano at DC got handed a load of characters he’d edited at Charlton Comics and Alan Moore was asked to write the series. Alan couldn’y be allowed to kill off recently purchased characters [now,of course, every single person in the DC comic universe has been killed an resurrected 7676589 times] so they were altered but we know who they were -and there are lots of sources out there for info. If you want a good concise summary try Wikipedia at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen

Dave Gibbons drew the series as noted and John Higgins’ work on colour was the cream on top of the cream! But a quick story snatch.

According to our movie pals at IMDB,for those of you who do not know [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409459/]:

“Watchmen” is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the “Doomsday Clock” - which charts the USA’s tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity… but who is watching the Watchmen?”

Believe me,you won’t learn much there in a hurry! And the cast,as noted, are reasonably unknown.
