Women? Drawing comics??!!  Good Lord,Maude –pass me m’ service revolver!

Seriously,I can see a lot of male comic geeks immediately shuddering at the thought:”Can women draw super heroes?”

Joking aside,I’ve seen how new female writers/artists get treated by so called “open-minded” comic morons.  At a Bristol comic meeting about three years ago a young woman was explaining this story idea she had and was developing into a strip.  I was nearby and thought it sounded great.  However, the,uh,’editor’ dismissed her and the idea immediately as they wanted more zombie contributions!!

Things haven’t changed in over 25 years and I sometimes feel I’ve wasted my life.  Anyway, never heard of Team Girl Comic?  Here’s what you need to know:

“We are artists, we are engineers, and we’re still stuck in school.

We are all girls, but we’re not just for girls!

We are robot punks, loveless science teachers and zombie enthusiasts. We are injured teapots, fangirl protestors and punjabi speaking cats.

At present we are Gill Hatcher, Jessica Hatcher, Emma McLuckie, Heather Middleton, Iona Mowat and Katie Pope. With Coleen Campbell, Jude Stewart, Jenny Soep, Mhairi Hislop, Claire Yvette and Karena Moore.

If you would like to join us, just give us a shout!”

So,the comic.  Nice,eye-catching cover.  Ditto the back cover –both by Gill Hatcher.  Gill also produces some neat strip work inside the book itself.  I’m just hoping none of this is self biographical because no one should live in a crane cab…with talking toys.

Jessica Hatcher also contributes a couple humorous strips.  Another Hatcher? Could they possibly be related?  Really –to Terri Hatcher?

Heather Middleton produced a nice strip –“Decision –or- How To Make Mooli Paratha” [just google it!].  I did take Heather’s characters advice and speak a few words of Punjabi to my cat,George.  All I got was a look as though the dog had pooped on the bed.  NEVER try to impress a cat –never works.

Emma McLuckie gives us an insight into the life of a killer duck and more.

Iona Mowat contributes some nice pieces but can I just say:just because a woman refuses sweets and birthday cake it does not mean she doesn’t deserve her uterus.  Have a uterus on me,Iona [I was told by the guy in the comic shop that the uterus is a type of Greek drink].

Okay,Katie Pope manages to summarise the Phantom Of The Opera in one illo and goes on to chart The Evolution Of The Indie Boy!

I don’t think any of the contributors here are going to disagree that,in some places, their work is a little rough around the edges?  If they do –I never wrote that.  I think that what does show through here is that the contributors seemed to be having fun.  I certainly want to see volume 2 and I hope that isn’t too far off.

Buy a copy –it’s not that expensive!  Go on:give it a try and I’m sure you’ll smile at least once.
