Cinebook -The 9th Art & Margot Award

Olivier Cadic tells me that he’s currently very busy at the Frankfurt Book Show.  Hopefully,Cinebook success will continue there;at the recent Birmingham convention they were selling a Cinebook title every three minutes -over two days!

I think that proves the point I made about there being need for a new British company taking advantage of all the comic buyers out there!

But even better news for Olivier:he was just given a literature award at a French Book Festival for his Queen Margot books.  This is the first time the award has been given to a graphic novel.

Congratulations to Olivier -a man working like a human dynamo to make Cinebook -The 9th Art become a huge success.  If there were people working in Egmont or Thomson like Olivier we’d have a thriving comic line.

Hey Tel (Or should that be “K-Tel” for all us survivors of the ’70s?),

It’s very reassuring to hear that Monsieur Cadic is making such a success of Cinebook; though, of course, in France comic books (Or “bandes desinee”) have always been regarded as a legitimate artistic medium fit for adults, as opposed to here in Britain & the US where for the longest time they’ve been held in relative contempt as being nothing more than “kid’s stuff”. Instead of bemoaning the fact that the likes of Egmont or DC Thomson don’t do enough to create new titles for the British market, maybe Cadic, with his millions, might be induced to start up his own comic book line of original titles, featuring British as well as European contributors, to run alongside the graphic novels & suqarebound compilations. What do you think?

Hmm. Darron Northall? Northall…oh yes -didn’t I know you YEARS ago?

As for the award winning Olivier. Well,I doubt he’d invest money in such a project. He has a very specific plan of publishing that has to go in stages [a very canny businessman] and so far it is bringing Cinebook great success -one book sold every three minutes at BICS!

To suddenly veer off and invest money in a monthly would be a very odd thing to do because it would suddenly mean diverting money and altering his plans.

As it is,in,say, five years,Olivier and Cinebook -The 9th Art will probably be THE largest publisher of comic albums/graphic novels in the UK.

I was tempted to ask Olivier about the idea of a monthly but that would be wrong and diverting him. He is a man on a mission!

  3. Rafiq Raja Said,

Oliver certainly deserves every bit of accolades he is receiving, for the sheer reason that he has taken Euro-Franco-Belgian Comics to a wider audience, and without compromising any bit of quality in that process.

By the way Terry, is the next batch of Cinebook remainder stock hitting anytime India? Oliver could have briefed you on that.

Actually, that wouldbe my fault not Olivier’s! The man is so busy that I never know if he’s in the UK,over in Europe or who knows!

I’ll ask about the next India releases and put that on CBO as a news item when I hear back.
