Bath Comic Art Exhibition
Between 13th September and 19th October,2008,the Victoria Art Gallery [admission free],Pulteney Bridge,Bath, will be housing a Comic Art exhibit. According to their leaflet:
“This exhibition showcases some of the greatest comic artists -from the early days of the 1940s,the often chaotic Marvel Comics of the 1960s and 1970s,through to the finest artists working today. Storyteller, film director, mythweaver -a legendary comic artist has to be all these things and more.”
Hmm. “early days of the 1940s”? Comics were going long before this and even the US comic book was going well in the 1930s -as any comic book historian knows. So is the exhibit concentrating only on the US?
The other statement that was so odd it hit me immediately is:”..the often chaotic Marvel comics of the 1960s and 1970s”-WHAT?! Marvel Comics in the 1960s and 1970s,headed by Stan Lee and with creators such as Jack Kirby,Steve Ditko and writers such as Roy Thomas and Marv Wolfman changed the face of comics! No serious comic historian would claim Marvel was “chaotic” -DC were struggling against the House Of Ideas!
Hmm. I really must stop getting carried away and believing all I read!!
I’ll certainly be going to the exhibition and it is just a pity that, after housing the Dan Dare exhibit a few years back, the Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery don’t put on a comic exhibit -Bristol hosts the biggest UK comic event in the May Expo!
Roll on September.
