JACK STAFF
JACK STAFF no.14Image Comics32pp Full colour & bw
Flippin’ ‘eck, matey me ole chum from the briney, guv. Yes,no sooner do I post a review of the Jack Staff Special than Paul Grist and Image realise they must get back onto CBO quickly! I’m reliably informed by a Hookah-smoking caterpillar that this idea is a mere fantasy..okay,back to comic.
Paul Grist [who, incidentally, would not grant me an interview a couple years back] is back on form with his builder-cum-super hero Jack Staff. As Paul keeps pointing out;just because the title is “Jack Staff” does not mean that character is in every issue or from cover-to-cover. Not a difficult concept to grasp –John Byrne’s 1980s Alpha Flight had a team title but rarely was there team action.
In this issue, builder Jack is taking Lynda Jones:Calendar Girl for a meal at “Tupper’s” [a name from old British comics –go on;look up Alf Tupper or “The Tough Of The Track”]. As is usual in these situations, things go pear-shaped. Who is the villain? Check out the cover and guess!
We also meet young [and older] Zipper Nolan and pals. The “pals” you have to see.
There are the usual flash backs and so on that seem out of context but then make sense.
And then we have the Burglar Bill back-up strip.with good old style black and white art. It seems to balance out the great colour work by Eric Stephenson in Jack Staff.
You cannot really go wrong if you pick up this comic. Don’t miss out –place an order for it each month.
