Dan Dare no.3Virgin Comics

Well, initially I said I’d wait to see whether the disappointing start to this series picked up with issue 2.  It did not.

Issue no.3?  I said I would not buy it so I did not.  I read it in the comic shop!

This was Dan Dare with no Dan Dare. A Digby who is not Digby.  A Prof Peabody who is not Prof Peabody. It is a comic full of clichés that turned into Starship Troopers.

I am very disappointed and just glad I was not foolish enough to buy this third issue. I’ve been a bit of a Garth Ennis fan and ditto Gary Erskine.  However, both have been disappointing and it might have been better had Virgin back Spaceships Away –a very far superior version of DD and treating Dare in the way he was meant to.  A treatment that has made Dare a unique British Silver Age character.

Nice McCarthy cover that almost made me buy it!

Date Published: 1/25/2008

Format: Paperback / Color Number of pages: 160

Rating: 13+

Price: $15.95

Got This one the other day and I’ve read it about three times and tonight will be read number 4 [yeah.  I know.  I do need to get a life].  So the company site tells us:

“The battle of the parallel world and for the future of mankind is drawing to an thrilling conclusion on the last volume of SNK vs. CAPCOM, SVC Chaos.  Order represented by Princess Athena, Shin and Cap seems squarely matched up to Chaos represented by Red Arremer, Dr. Jones and Professor Chisan.  The contestants must continue onwards until only one ultimate fighter each is left to represent Chaos and Order.  The warrior representing Chaos must take on Princess Athena and the warrior representing Order will battle Red Arremer in a final death match that will determine the fate of the world

Who will be the victor? The surprising conclusion of SVC Chaos is finally here.”

That does not even begin to suggest what is awaiting the reader!

Packaging, print quality, etc.,is exactly what you expect from Dr Master Publications –the highest standard!  And the colour…wonderful!  The action is fast paced.  Heroes die.

There are the fighting moves that I just love –“Special Blue Bottom First Hit!”/”Exceed Shinbu”/”Special Crack Shoot”[!] and the incredible “Exceed Super Furious Fandango vs Exceed Shun Goku Satsu”!!

Goenitz fighting Iori and Kyo to a standstill..and then the Martian invaders arrive.

Yes,I did say “Martian invaders”!

Space and time warp around the combatants…and the twist ending is fabulous.

I found this to be one of the most fun comic-books I’ve read in a long time.  It really cannot be faulted and I’ll be cherishing this volume set for a looong time!

Chi Wan Shum has done incredibly well in threading everything together to make this series a must buy.  Those currently writing for Marvel and DC [or Dan Dare] should read this and take note on how to write a classic!

“When last we left poor little Kamioda-kun, a demon had shattered his conviction that he had the competence to be a priest when it exposed to him the suppressed erotic yearnings buried in his heart. But Ayano-chan proves the perfect pill to cure him of his ills, and the summer break offers hope and promise for the boy who, confidence restored, intends to use the time working on his priesthood exams. Ha! That is until he discovers that everyone has left him for the pleasure grounds of

Okinawa, including the next club on his exam list: the council knights. But how will he ever be able to keep his mind focused on his exams with all those delicious bikini-clad beauties wondering around?  Find out inside this fun-filled third installment of The Premature Priest.”

I am Terry Hooper…and I’ve…read…Manga..and,gulp,liked it. Gangsters threaten a little old lady and Kamioda tries to intervene but where he puts that bamboo cane-EEK!  Luckily,Sherrice is there to take care of the serious stuff.

Will Masato Kamioda ever get it together with  Ayano Mochizuki?  After all,he’s shared a bath with Sherrice D’Arc!  For a guy interested [seemingly] in one girl, boy is he seeing a lot of the other girls in some very compromising positions!

And do girls really get up to the sort of things these girls do at karaoke nights??

I have to admit that, having not seen volumes 1 & 2,Puri Puri 3 & 4 have gotten me to read and stick with Manga–it’s growing on me and I can’t wait til vol.5! Some nice pencil character illustrations also included.

Another recommendation –BUY!

PROJECT SUPER POWERS #0Dynamite Entertainment

Covers: Alex Ross (Connecting Covers)Story by Alex Ross and Jim Krueger; written by Jim KruegerPenciller: Stephen Sadowski, DOUG KLAUBA AND w/Alex RossColorist:TBD

According to Dynamite:

“From the dawn of the 20th Century came a new chapter in mankind’s history, unleashed during a time of great war and destruction.

It was the beginning of the Age of the SUPERPOWERS, yet with the closing of the Second World War, this new spark seemingly flickered and died.

 Until now…

Now the story can be told of the great lost SUPERPOWERS — men and women with incredible abilities who changed the course of mankind forever…

and who had been thought lost …

Until now…

Now, DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT and Alex Ross unleash the SUPERPOWERS! This explosive #0 issue features a story crafted by Justice collaborators Alex Ross and Jim Kruger, joined by artists Stephen Sadowksi, Doug Klauba and additional art by Alex Ross. The story of SUPERPOWERS begins here, in the present day with the Fighting Yank, coming to terms with the ghosts of his past and present! As our story unfolds, we journey to the heights and depths of the Second World War and come face-to-face with the great forgotten heroes of the ages, and solve the mystery of where these legends disappeared to after the great war.

This is THE event of 2007, and it leads directly into the SUPERPOWERS series!

Issue #0 is where it all begins and features 28 pages of story and art PLUS a full SUPERPOWERS color sketchbook by Ross and original Ross interconnecting covers – all for just a buck!”

NO colour sketchbook if you are outside the

US it seems.  And the event of 2007 beginning in 2008!  But let’s put that aside.  Back in..1984[?],Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons brought us The Watchmen.  Originally meant to be the then, supposedly purchased,Charlton Action Line of characters…but because of the storyline they would have only been used once.  So,Moore and Gibbons created a group of heroes whop had been active in the 1940s and threw them into a “realistically grim world”.  Characters killed by a mastermind working behind the scenes –a hero gone wrong to try to bring about world peace. Hmm…anyone had an original idea since?

We have The Twelve from Marvel where 1940s Timely heroes are thrust into the gritty realistic modern world where someone is killing them off… In Super Powers we have a similar scenario –the Fighting Yank seemingly tricked into trapping” his old friends to bring about world peace but something is going on behind the scenes. I won’t go into the list of similar series since Watchmen. Somewhere, behind the scenes in comicdom,a force is sucking originality out of creators.  Either that or today’s creators are lacking imagination. The artwork here is okay.  The Twelve seems to win hands down on that score. It was nice to see these old Golden Age characters but, again, they are “dullards” unable to grasp larger concepts.  That seems standard in these books now.

Why,why, why can’t these heroes be treated properly in stories set in the 1940s or 1950s?  No need for Nazies. There is a wealth of scope.

When I learned that, after seeing these Golden Age characters Warren Ellis has uttered his interest in working with a similar cast of characters I baulked.  Time to destroy Public Domain characters it seems.

My words,as before, ring out –“let’s wait til the next issue”.  The real #1 should show us how this series will develop.  So,hang in there.

The Death Of The New Gods #5

Written by Jim Starlin; Art and covers by Starlin & Matt Banning  The blurb says it all, though not quite:

“A crazed Mister Miracle attacks Orion! Can Scott Free and the son of Darkseid come to terms before more blood is spilled? Plus, Metron discovers shocking secrets concerning the deaths of the New Gods. “

DC Universe  |  40pg.  |  Color  |  $3.50 US  On

Sale January 30, 2008
Now,one of the few titles to have a great look and fantastic story-line is TDOTNG.

There is something about Starlin;give him a chance and he’ll produce a mind-blowing cosmic story you won’t forget in a while!  There is nothing –nothing- quite like Starlin’s artwork.  I was worried when I read that Matt Banning and Art Thibert would be inking.  Not that there is anything wrong with Banning or Thibert –you always worry that unique Starlin experience is going to be spoiled by “lesser lights”.  Banning and Thibert have excelled at,perhaps,if I may so in a very unsacriligious way say, accentuating Starlin’s work.

Who is killing the New Gods and stealing their souls –Metron finds out what is behind all the death while the new Scott Free and Superman have seemingly made their minds up who the actual killer is…but are either of them right?

When I was told “they’re killing off the New Gods” I thought “here we go again”.  But I was wrong.  The story,as I’ve said,is great fun and well scripted while the art almost rivals some of those

Hong Kong masterpieces in dynamism and colour.  A team of three creators who know their business and newer, lesser creators could do well to study them!  And DC should be really pushing this –it is one of their best titles after all! A definite “must buy”.

JACK STAFF SPECIAL #1Image Comics

Well,Paul Grist is back.  It’s taken more than a while but this first Special rewards everyone for waiting.

The Eternal Warrior starts everything off by killing Molachi The Immortal who, quite frankly, really deserved what he got.  “Jerk” is a description that springs to mind.  But then Molachi…or…no,that would give away a few little twists.  But Molachi does return and Jack Staff and Becky Burdock [Vampire Reporter] have to face him…Ben Kulmer,The Claw, gets in on the act also.

Is it colourful? Yes!  Is it a good, entertaining FUN story? YES!!  Should you buy it?  Well,if you are a moron who cannot see comics outside of Batman or The X-Men –NO!  It’ll be wasted on you.  But if quality on all levels is what you are looking for  then YES!!  Buy it!  Nice to know that with no.14 the Jack Staff title goes monthly.  Yes –MONTHLY!!I’ve got it on order already. The good times are back!!
