As a child,Hero’s family was attacked and killed by a practitioner of Northern Mantis kung fu.  This assassin was entrusted,by the affluent head of a local Triad,to retrieve Hero’s family heirloom…..

        …..The Legendary Blood Sword!!

This package was an early Christmas present for me!  It starts wonderfully with the character Jian in a cavern witnessing a titanic epic battle between…The Rat King and Mouse King.

And,before you ask, yes,an actual rat and actual mouse!

If you think it’s not much of a battle then you are fooling yourselves.  This is an epic four page battle that you will not forget in a hurry!  Who needs “World War Hulk” when you can have Ma drawing this stuff.

The mysterious blind swordsman gets to work.  Hero Hua is attacked.  Meet Strong Man Sky and Jack Of All Trades [looking like a  Village People wannabee] as well as the armless master of martial arts The Jade Servant….and the Black Dragon General!!

Ma shows off the usual highly skilled art we’ve come to expect from him and the twists and turns take us from forests, building sites, back streets, mountains and more.  There is very little doubt why this series is near legendary in Manhua;the action, story and vibrant colours are mostly unlike anything you’ll see in US comics and I just find it hard to believe that, while Manga gushes all over the place,Manhua like this can struggle to be recognised in the West.

The folk at Dr Master deserve a great deal of credit for producing such high quality books and I just hope that they turn up at the International Comic Expo & Manga Festival in Bristol [ in May 2008] to promote their books.

If you want to try reading a Manhua book then you must start with the best –and this is the best!!
