Back in 1997 I had this really silly idea that there needed to be some type of “Central Library” for British comics. People wanting to get rid of unwanted British comics could send them along and anyone who wanted to research or look at the comics could.
The first big blow was the place to store the comics. It fell through.
The biggest blow was,of course, the death of Denis Gifford who was behind the idea 100%.
Of course even if we had gotten everything together there was the hurdle of people not wanting to donate comics.
In 2002 I altered the idea. with so manyscanned comics out there I thought comic buffs would be willing to forward scans so that everything could go onto disc -still forming a central repository but less cumbersome.
Although scans of The Eagle and comics from the 1960s onward seem to be getting more common,pre-1950 comic scans are very rare.
I know, and have heard from people with collections from the Diamond and Golden Ages of British comics [see feature elsewhere for definition of these ages]. However, they will not forward copies as it would “ruin the uniqueness” of their collection.
Absolute nonsense.
But the BCBA is still possible but it needs scans. Scans only collectors would have who are lucky enough to have these comics.
If you have any from the British Diamond and Golden Ages please get in touch!
