Arrested Manga Artist Fined -Two Others Win Court case!

Posted by admin On September - 27 - 2007

I’ve been asked several times now what happened to the Manga artist arrested on obscenity charges?  He got fined!  Other artists have done better however…

The Matsuyama station of the Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported that the manga artist charged with the distribution of obscene drawings was issued a summary order to pay a 300,000-yen (about US$2,600) fine on 12th September.

Although unnamed in the latest report, the artist was previously identified as  Masaya Miyashita during his August 23 arrest. Miyashita lives in the city of Matsuyama in the southern Japanese prefecture of Ehime.

The illustrator was charged for distributing seven obscene works, including Pretty Girls, to Tokyo-area bookstores and other retailers. Matsuyama prosecutors said he printed 11,000 copies at a printing company in the nearby  prefecture of Okayama, and then distributed the copies between 2005 and 2006.

A district court in Tokyo awarded almost $178,000 (USD) to 11 manga artists, including Go Nagai and Takehiko Inoue, in their lawsuit against two individuals and two companies in a copyright infringement case concerning the scanning and uploading of various manga titles. The amount awarded was close to the $180,000 (USD) sought.
