RISING STARS OF MANGA -Bath!
Now,although I’ve interviewed a few of Tokyopop’s “Rising Stars Of Manga” and the fact that Manga appears very -very- popular with CBO regulars, the company itself won’t even send review copies of books or news releases to me. So,I was very surprised when Darron Northall sent this item in.
Bath. 20 miles away -no one even told me about the Exhibition. I could be petty and ignore Tokyopop and all mention of it but won’t.
Over to Darron…
The Museum of Asian Art in Bath is currently exhibiting strips by the winners & runners-up in this year’s Tokyopop-sponsored “Rising Stars of Manga” competition which is designed to find the best new manga artists in Britain. I checked out the exhibition this weekend and was very impressed by the high standard of artwork on show.
The best piece IMHO was a strip entitled “Poison” which is essentially an “Upstairs, Downstairs” tale with a venomous twist; it lulls you into a false sense of security because the main characters are rendered in such a big-eyed, cutesy way.
If you are in the vicinity of Bath I would recommend checking out the Museum. If that’s not possible, log onto the website www.meaa.org. uk, or see if you can pick up a copy of the Tokyopop collected edition featuring all the strips plus biographical info about the artists; there’s also a volume collecting the winners & runners-up from 2006.
Also in Bath this weekend: the “Daily Telegraph”-sponsored “Festival of Children’s Literature”. Unfortunately, since it was on the Friday, I missed the launch of the “DFC” which is a brand new British weekly comic (I also missed the Harry Hill event, but that’s another story).
Does any one out there have more info about the “DFC”?
