PLOP!

When Andreas Alt told me he’d be sending along a copy of the latest issue of PLOP I had mixed feelings.  I’d first been introduced to one of Germany’s best Small Press mags back in the 1980s when Heike Anacher was editor.  The mag was a mixed bag of styles and was one of my favourites.

But it’s 2007 -could PLOP still be any good?

The envelope came through the letter box and I took a deep breath.

The cover was okay so how about the contents?  Rina Zinner’s “In Leipzig” probably sums up how every convention goer feels.  Everything shoots by so fast as you enjoy yourself then..back to the real world.

“Visiting Day” by N.N. was a true joy and must have taken ages to draw and I had to wonder what size paper it was drawn on:some of the buildings looked so detailed but so small.  It’s not the most original concept but it is carried off really well and I was sorry to come to the end of the 15 pages.

I would really love to see more of the anonymous N.N.s work.

Moritz Stetter’s “Scheisse traumen” is very stylish and I’d love to see more from this creator also.

Ulrich Magin’s “Paris Hilton Sucht Gott” is basic cartooning but very effective -same could be said for the adorable “Die Kaffeetrinkerin” by Andy Beck.

There are articles and reviews and I have to admit that, yes,PLOP is STILL as good as it used to be. A pure joy for this aging..well,aging old man?

PLOP #78 has 64pp and is A5 [Digest] and will set you back 3 Euros.  There are other issues available and I suggest that you contact Andreas if interested.  His mail address is:

I would highly recommend PLOP to anyone and again point out that you should not ignore it because it isn’t in your own language -give it a go!

It would be interesting to know what happened to Georg K. Berres,Rudolph Perez and Zebra magazine or even Jo 84 and Spruhende Phantasie  -or Lippe-or…you get the point, right?
