Rift On Outlaws?

Posted by Terry On August - 17 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

In 1984 Terry Hooper created the long out of print but legendary futuristic series “Outlaws Of The Urban Forest”.  In 2006,following much brainstorming, the duo that brought the world the 1980s anthropomorphic crime series,Vigilante Vulture,Darron Northall [writer] and Paul Brown [artist] decided to create a follow-up 23 years on!

Originally, there were creative differences over the title -Northall wanting “Outlaws 2525″ while Brown wanted “Outlaws 4029″!

The often stormy creative arguements have been described as “A van Gogh vs Oliver Reed punch-up”.  The rift seems to have widened with the May 2007 deadline disappearing into the distance.

A recent “fist ‘n’ fury” encounter between the two resulted in the following being published online:

“…Darron Northall may be looking for a new artist to draw the already “ troubled” comeback script of his, OUTLAWS 2525.  It seems that the”moody” and “difficult” artist on the series is taking so long to complete the first part, that their “tenuous” collaboration may soon be at an end.

“Apparently, friction developed early on over the simple question of the year in which the story is set, and has subsequently worsened.

“Despite the idea of working together again originating with the artist himself, he has since attempted to distance himself from the project, and has been rumoured to be considering giving up drawing the strip.

A “friend”of the artist has said:’He [Brown] originally asked Darron Northall to come up with the script for this very loose idea based on an old Terry Hooper comic, to which Darron duly obliged, as well as writing lots of really great background stuff, including a synopsis for what would be a 4 part miniseries. So he gets to work on the strip, but realises he’s really forgotten how to do comics, and so his initial pages on the strip aren’t really that great, and he knew it, but really started blaming it all on Darron’s script, which is really unfair. I think the fact is, he really can’t hack it, so wants to pull out and blame Darron. It’s a bit pathetic really, especially as he was the one pushing Darron into writing it. I mean, he practically bullied him into it, and now is trying to disassociate himself. He’s even been really insulting about Terry Hooper, without having any reason at all, slagging off his work and calling him a “Fat old wrestler who couldn’t fight for s*** !’

“The reference to Hooper involves his late 1970s-early 1980s pro-wrestling career as “Masked Mad Monster Crushing Mongo” -following a brief Punk Rock career.  Hooper himself, would only comment:’I am not getting involved in this!’

Well, both artist and writer have yet to confirm the story, but CBO may be able to shed light on the matter via our soon to be published interview with VIGILANTE  VULTURE & OUTLAWS 2525 writer Darron Northall, who will hopefully be discussing the new script, and, who knows, a possible new collaborator !!

In the meantime a very confused publisher asks “WHY?!”

Posted by Terry On August - 16 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

Okay,a few things that ought to be coming soon to CBO.

Publisher of Cinebook and writer,Olivier Cadic is being interviewed.

Creator of Amaranth and other strips,Willie Hewes is being interviewed.

And,since it’s so popular,Manga will be represented by more interviews with UK creators -can you believe I’m this good to you?!

Hopefully,a few Manhua creators will also be interviewed so stay tuned for more on that this month.

As our site stats hit the roof I say thank you again but creators to be interviewed I’m always on the look out for:know any then get in touch.

More comic reviews -I promise- for the fan boys and I’ll be adding a few links that might interest comic lovers.

I could say more but just keep coming back -you won’t get bored.

Exclusive Hellboy Cover …For Limited Edition BICS 2007 Book!

Even more artists are signing on to attend Great Britain’s

Birmingham International Comics Show (BICS) as word spreads among their peers that the popular artists who attended last year’s debut event are looking forward to returning to

Birmingham on 13-14th October.
One of the highlights for BICS fans will be meeting theirfavourite artists to have comics signed and sketches drawn. Some of the artists prove so popular that there are often long queues. With that in mind, BICS requests fans respect that when the artists appear not to be on show-related business (like taking a lunch break) that they not be interrupted. Many of the guests will be having their own private stands others may be taking positions at various publishers’ stands during the weekend. Plus of course, there are plenty of lively events and panel shows that artists will be involved with. Times and locations for these various activities can be found at the convention’s website. These may be subject to change and updated accordingly. Additionally BICS’ staff will be able to advise people, alongside appropriate signage being placed throughout the venue. For the very best in show information the

Birmingham
International Comics Show Showguide will become a cherished souvenir. Alongside times and locations for the many events and competitions that will be taking place, there will be exclusive features about BICSguests and on comic companies celebrating anniversaries plus a very special Hellboy cover produced by BICS’ star guests from the

USA, Mike Mignola and Kevin Nowlan.
To ensure this special convention book is even more special2 the organisers have foresworn selling the Showguide this year and again invested their money in the people they believe count the most – the fans! Once more produced to the highest quality, it will now be in a limited edition format to ensure those who book in advance have something unique that latecomers could possibly miss out on. The

Birmingham International Comics Show Showguide
will become a rare collector’s classic, and so unique that few people will want to part with their copies for sale on e-bay! There has been a demand for family tickets from Americans and groups of fans are due in from

Europe already alongside

Great Britain’s hordes planning to gather for BICS 2007. Fans who don’t want to be disappointed are now advised to pre-book tickets at what is guaranteed to be a spectacular show!

PHIL GASCOIGNE 1934-2007

Posted by Terry On August - 16 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

gascoine_p1.jpg

John Freeman from Down the Tubes has forwarded some sad news for those involved in British comics. Phil had worked in the girls comic Jinty from the first issue to last, worked on the war strip “The Sarge”,in Battle Action as well as working for Bunty.  When Phil jumped to the

US comic market he worked on,amongst others, the Unknown Soldier.   Recently he was working on the Dutch comic Wendy.

John writes:

“I’m very sorry to report that British comics artist Phil Gascoine has died after a short illness. For those of you who knew him the news comes as a terrible shock. He was once chairman of the SSI and always a consummate professional. In the words of his good friend, fellow artist Barrie Mitchell, who I spoke with this morning, “There are not a lot of artists who can turn their hands to anything, but Phil was one of them.”

I am preparing a tribute to Phil for my downthetubes web site and would welcome memories of Phil if you have them. He was always one of those creators who would mix with all generations and was still working on DC Thomson’s Wendy. He will be much missed by all who knew him or worked with him.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you may have if you knew Phil personally.”

The Baltimore Comic Convention organisers have sent out the following Press Release:

“An open letter from Marc Nathan, and your friends at the Baltimore Comic-Con:

We at the Baltimore Comic-Con express our deepest sympathies to the friends, family, and fans of the late, great Michael Wieringo, who sadly left us too early this week. Mike was a true friend, and always a welcome and integral part of our “little, big” show here in Baltimore every September. We will all feel Ringo’s absence next month, but his spirit will live on.

In the past few days, literally hundreds of e-mails and calls have come our way, asking what plans the Baltimore Comic-Con is making to honor Mike– many professionals and publishers offering their own time and services to assure recognition for one of comics’ greats. Let me say, we are currently discussing with Ringo’s family and friends the best way to honor his memory, and intend to offer up something special at the ‘Con. We also heartily support anyone who wants to do something at the show on their own, be they a fan, a friend, a publisher, retailer, or all of the above.

An announcement will be made next week, but rest assured, we are on it. We plan not to mourn Mike’s passing September 8-9, but rather, to celebrate his life.

But, right now, let us take a few days, and remember a dear friend. We’ll miss you, Ringo…”
