Diamond Comics, one of India’s,in fact possibly the, oldest comic publishers has new releases.  Sadly very little information is given on issues apart from what you see on the covers and images on the Diamond Comics site are so small that they are just usable here.

Though sadly lagging well behind Raj Comics on the use of the internet,Diamond Comics are still great fun,if sometimes naiive by,say,US/European standards.

The bulky Comics World features a host of characters including Archie and He Man.

Other titles available are Mahabali Shaka and The Bloody Hill…

DYNAMO 5 LOWERS PRICE

Bold new story, bold new price!

August 13th, 2007 (Berkeley, CA) - Jay Faerber and Mahmud A. Asar’s DYNAMO 5 pulls off the impossible as a new storyline lowers its price to $2.99.

“The reception to our first arc has gone above and beyond what we imagined,” says writer Jay Faerber. “So much so we’re confident enough to lower the cost by a substantial amount. This combined with the inexpensively priced trade paperback should make it easy to bring on any reluctant readers.”

Issue #8 opens with the illegitimate children of Captain Dynamo torn apart by revelations they never saw coming. In fact, their latest battle has them fighting against their strongest foe yet without their two most powerful members. Much like the preceding arc this one promises one shocker after another with further secrets changing the way you look at our titular team.

Image Comics Publisher Erik Larsen says, “It’s hard to launch an all new superteam in a market flooded with them. Despite all that Jay and Mahmud have put out something unlike any other funnybook on the racks. We couldn’t be happier with the book performing far beyond our projections.”

DYNAMO 5 #8 (AUG072006), a 32-page comic with a cover price of $2.99, will be available for order in the August issue of Previews and will go on sale October 10.

[above:wanna read CA#1? Nah! Slab it!]

Before we go anywhere else;if you want a site dedicated to Captain America with genuine photos of Cap during the Big WW 2?  Go to:

http://captain-america.us/

I first came across an arguement about “slabbing” comics on a yahoo group about three years ago.  Basically, you get a certificate that the comic is of a certain grade and the comic encased in plastic.

No,I am not kidding.  Comics in mylar bags with card backing and in comic boxes are no longer good enough!

Let’s get this into some perspective.  You’re born. You live. You buy comics.  You die. End of story.  Okay, collect comics that you like and if you get older and want to sell do it.  Comics are printed in their many thousands per issue.  A mystery blight needs to destroy every other copy before your copy is worth more than you paid.

To have comics encased in plastic shows a very sad person with more money than brains.  It’s like those people [usually male] who buy huge stacks of new comics as they arrive in shops but never read them.  The comics are straight into bags and into boxes “until their value increases”.

Read the bloody things.  Have a few hours of escapism.

But,I think this interesting article says EVERYTHING!

“Certified Guaranty Co.

puts comics on a slab

It’s not superpowers that make comic book heroes untouchable these day. It’s the stiff sleeves that render them unreadable and more valuable.

By Geoff Boucher, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
August 21, 2007

Primary grader

Primary grader

Remember when comic books were considered too juvenile to be read? Now it appears that they have become too valuable to be touched.

A company in Sarasota, Fla., has created a sensation among collectors by taking their comic books, both rare vintage issues and brand-new ones, and encasing them in plastic slabs that make them both unreadable and instantly more valuable.

The Captain Marvel and Donald Duck comic books that arrive at the offices of the Certified Guaranty Co. are treated like archival treasures of the highest order — armed sentries guard the lobby, technicians and appraisers wear latex gloves as they carefully examine each page and a sophisticated sonic device is used to seal the books up in the sturdy plastic containers that some collectors call “coffins.”

Depending on the age and pedigree of the book being appraised and “slabbed,” CGC charges from $12 to $1,000 for its services and, in upcoming months, the 7-year-old company will slab its 1 millionth comic book. That book may be a 60-year-old issue of Detective Comics that costs as much as a Porsche but it could also be the latest $3 issue of World War Hulk — about half of the books that come to CGC now are fresh from the printer and probably 80% of them have never been read.

All of this seems like heresy to many old-line comic book purists.

“It’s changed the nature of the hobby, it’s turned comic books into a medium of exchange instead of a medium of entertainment,” groaned James Friel, who works at Comic Relief, the longtime landmark store in Berkeley. To Friel, who has been collecting comics since 1958, “it makes these books a sealed-up commodity. You can’t read them. It makes me sad. Some of these books will be sealed up forever.”

Frank Miller, arguably the most important comic book artist of the last two decades, has seen plenty of fans lock up his books in the slabs in recent years and he shakes his head at the whole concept.

“I think it’s all pretty silly,” said Miller, whose graphic novels “300″ and “Sin City” have led to major Hollywood success stories. “But I’m of a generation that love the feel and smell of these ephemeral old leaflets. . . . Maybe it will get to the point where I can put out comics that have blank pages inside — just covers — and no one will notice.”

The slabs are made with two sheets of thick, stiff plastic, and the books inside are encased in a thin, heat-sealed interior sleeve as well. A label inside the archival slab has a CGC hologram, a unique bar code and a description of its condition with a numeric grade. The overall package is as sturdy as a plastic clipboard and lands with a clatter if you drop it on the floor.

The CGC success story is not based on just the plastic “coffins” — it’s also the company’s introduction of a 25-point scale for grading the condition of comics. That new standard has brought a precision to the once-subjective hobby that has inspired a wave of investments by non-collectors. In other words, lots of people who don’t know the difference between Green Lantern and Green Arrow are now buying slabbed comics and putting them in safe-deposit boxes.

“With our grading, it’s much easier for novices to come and buy valuable comic books and know what they are getting,” said Steven Borock, the president and primary grader at CGC. “In essence, what we offer is the cheapest insurance in the world. If you’re buying a $5,000 comic book, why wouldn’t you send us the book to be sure it’s what you think it is? There is a long, long history of people getting ripped off.”

And Borock should know: The reason he has his job now is that once upon a time he was the naive collector getting ripped off.

It’s a sad day when a starry-eyed fanboy finds out that, in real life, truth and justice are not always the American way. For Borock, that heartbreak moment came in the mid-1980s after he decided to sell vintage issues of the Amazing Spider-Man and the Brave & the Bold that he had been buying at comic-book conventions through the years. That’s when the Brooklyn native discovered that many of his most prized issues had been doctored with acrylic paint, glue and paper patches to disguise their flaws.

The surreptitious surgery made Borock’s books into kryptonite on the collector’s market. “They were worth about $16,000 less than I paid,” Borock recalled with a groan. “If I wasn’t such a die-hard fanatic the whole experience would have chased me out of the hobby.”

Instead, much like Batman, Borock sought vengeance for his youthful trauma. He didn’t don a cape, but did become an outspoken merchant and a detective of sorts, learning all he could from his father (who owned the Letter Guild, a prominent Manhattan print shop) about paper stocks and printing nuances. He also learned all the tricks of “fixing” comic books — how a light dusting of Pam cooking spray could give a cover a false sheen (and, eventually, eat away at it) or how a ragged-looking cover could be given a nice clean edge with a careful razor cut. A rolled-up piece of white Wonder Bread, he noted, is an effective way to erase blemishes on old comic books without leaving streaks.

“But you have to take the crust off first,” he quickly added.

This curious education paid off big for Borock when a new era began in comic books: the age of EBay. The on-line auction house created a major surge in the sale of comics, baseball cards and other collectibles. The problem was that crooks and rubes often came together in the bidding rooms. To be fair, even among honest dealers, there were wildly different definitions of what qualified as “mint condition.”

“It was the Wild West,” Borock said. “You could buy a book from someone who said it was in mint condition and when it arrived, it was beat-up or missing pages. And what could you do? The person that sold it could say it wasn’t like that when they mailed it or they could say you had switched it with another book.”

A company called Certified Collectibles Group, a mainstay in the appraisal of coins, took notice of the slippery comics marketplace and decided that a third-party appraiser — especially one that (literally) sealed the deal with a plastic-protected book — could make big money. Then they tapped Borock, a genial 44-year-old Grateful Dead fan with a ponytail who had become a figure of integrity to other merchants, to lead its start-up comic book division.

“And everybody instantly hated me,” Borock said. “Like 90% of the dealers. They hated what we were doing. People said bad things about me. . . I lost sleep over it.”

AVENGERS-INVADERS

Posted by admin On August - 21 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

Can no one use the internet? Hmm. I keep getting mails asking for more info on the series which is a ways off but Ryan Penagos over at the Marvel boards has covered all the bases so let’s give Marvel some much needed publicity!

Captain America’s back? Well, yes and no. Fans worldwide were ecstatic this weekend when Marvel announced that Alex Ross was making his way back to Marvel. And they went absolutely nuts when they saw the provided teaser image of Captain America, cryptically emblazoned with the word “Return.” And now, after only a few days, the veil of secrecy is lifted and the truth—Alex Ross, Jim Krueger and Steve Sadowski return to Marvel in 2008 for the 12-part AVENGERS/INVADERS maxi-series—is sure to both surprise and excite.

Not quite the return of Captain America many were expecting, AVENGERS/INVADERS is actually a much more ambitious undertaking, constituting a time travel story featuring the Invaders in their prime thrust into the current Marvel Universe. And yes, the series will be fully integrated into, and reflective of, Marvel continuity.

“As a fan, as a reader, I enjoy those books,” says Ross from his home in Illinois. “I enjoy MIGHTY and NEW [AVENGERS]. I have to read them every time they come in. That’s the first book I have to ready every week that it ships. We’re calling the series AVENGERS/INVADERS because for one, the brand name of Avengers has so increased in value now—because of the quality of all these series and the excitement regarding them—that you don’t have to worry about whether it’s got the modifier of NEW or MIGHTY in front of it. And in truth in the story, you’re going to get both. How could you not?

Mighty Avengers #1

“Given the storyline, how could you not have both teams become very much involved to try and find out who these time travelers are or if they are the real deal, fighting over them and basically controlling or liberating them will be a key story point,” explains Ross. “I’m so thrilled [Marvel] brought back people like the 1970s Ms. Marvel and Spider-Woman, it’s just purely speaking to my heart as a fan. When you see things that are resurrected from Marvel’s past, you realize, ‘Why the hell did they ever get rid of that?’ It’s really thrilling to get a chance to play with that. If I can figure out a way to somehow in all of this revive Power Man’s yellow shirt and tiara, I would do that too, but somehow I don’t think that there would be an excuse to do that within the series.

“We have to use Luke Cage in our story because he’s such an important character,” he continues. “And of course, working with the contemporary Iron Man is a very striking thing. I’m not one of those fans who’s against what they’ve been doing, I find the creative exploration to be very exciting and I have been jealous of wanting a chance to play in the playground and admiring a lot of the work that has been done.”

AVENGERS/INVADERS has actually been on the burner for more than a year and in that time, as any well-versed Marvel fan knows, much as been done to the heroes of the Marvel U. Maybe none moreso that the Sentinel of Liberty, Captain America.

“Captain America being dead in the Marvel Universe today is not what we were every planning around in this entire endeavor,” admits Ross. That must’ve thrown a kink into the massive story Ross and Co. have been plotting, right?

New Avenegers #28

“Actually, it may be one of the best things to happen to the storyline,” reveals Ross. “Well, there’s the thought of beforehand, the meeting of Golden Age/Modern Age Cap or what I would call the equivalent of Earth 1/Earth 2 Cap, that could be interesting too. But it sends more resonance to people in the modern universe to see a guy that they just witnessed die and have him come back, but have it be the guy in his youth, not his prime, but basically his point of origin that really constructed [his character] and was the key point of the history in the ’40s. It will always remain part of Captain America’s character that he is a soldier from World War II and that’s what he was created for.

“Unlike most superheroes who were updated over time, or that’s just considered to be one aspect of their history if they lived then, that’s the defining moment of Captain America’s origin. And to take him directly from that and bring him to today is almost like just crossing that 60-something years of being held in ice, doing it now except you’ve got the irony of being sucked right out of it with his team. The idea of the Namor-meets-Namor is one of the coolest things I’m looking forward to.”

Aside from Cap and Namor, who else can we look forward to seeing? “You can expect exactly what’s in the title,” says editor Steve Wacker. “Beyond that, it’s still a secret. Rest assured though, this is firmly set in the Marvel Universe of 2008.”

And that setting brings with it many nuances and potential character moments. “Let’s just say you can’t meet Captain America from the 1940s and not expect there to be dramatic ramifications. It’s thrilling watching both [Ross] and Krueger play with the modern day Marvel toys, and i think people are going to be pretty surprised with what they’ve come up with.”

Alex Ross Avengers art

And it’s not just Ross and Krueger who plan to tear it up in AVENGERS/INVADERS. For penciler Steve Sadowski [AVENGERS, JSA], this is about as big a project as it gets. “I am VERY excited!” exclaims Sadowski. “When [Dynamite Publisher] Nick Barrucci approached me to do this, I couldn’t believe the opportunity! This is easily one of, if not THE highest profile gigs of my career. To be working on New Avengers (which I was already buying faithfully, and LOVING) and having a chance to shine a spotlight on the Invaders—it’s really incredible.”

While Krueger and Ross have become one of comics’ premiere writer/artist teams with the EARTH X trilogy and Justice for DC, Sadowski enters into the equation as a not entirely new factor. “I worked loosely with both Jim and Alex on the PARADISE X: DEVILS book,” he says. “But [I] didn’t have a lot of contact with Alex. A few phone calls at most. Anyone who knows me or has been to my house knows what a huge fan I am of Alex Ross. He is one of a handful of artists who has truly inspired me to become a better artist. To say I am thrilled would be a gross understatement!

“As with any of my work, my approach is to make the characters as believable and realistic as possible and still maintain that ‘old school’ escapism. I take one issue at a time—the only way I can do it..When it’s done, I’ll look back and realize how big a task it was!”

A big task, indeed. With dozens of characters to choose from, AVENGERS/INVADERS opens up a wealth of opportunities.

“Between the Avengers and the Invaders, there are so many great and colorful characters, ” says Sadowski. “Of the Avengers, my favorites have ALWAYS been Wonder Man, the Vision, Hawkeye and of course CAP! Of the New and Mighty Avengers, I am really looking forward to Iron Fist and Dr Strange, Ms. Marvel, Ares. Okay, who am I kidding, Wolverine’s gonna be fun too! As for the Invaders, my favorite is Union Jack. I think it’s one of the best costumes ever! Damn, there’s too many I like. I don’t know yet how many of these will be included in the main story. I know Alex and Jim would throw in everyAvenger , Invader and Liberty Legionnaire they could, given the chance And you never know, they maybe just will!”

“We really want a chance to illustrate some of those characters from the ’40s, who in some cases haven’t ever been seen Marvel publishing for the last 60 years,” says Ross. “We’re hoping that given the design and direction of where the series is going, we’ll be visiting that by the end of the series.

“I was wracked with paranoia and worry that they wouldn’t let us cross the Invaders over into today and I knew that if they allowed that, [if] they embraced that, the story would just write itself from there,” admits Ross. “That’s pretty much exactly what happened. Once you consider what would it take to get some of those characters to suddenly show up today and then even having it be somewhat of a mystery as to how they are here. You know how the different teams of the Avengers are going to react to that, how the world is going to reacts to that. Again, it makes your job easier because the biggest dramatic thing that could have happened in the crossover, instead of just having modern characters go into the past—just simply that is not revolutionary—is having them come today.

“It means something more to the world today, and that’s of course where we’re taking this confusing thing of the return of Captain America, that essentially is truly the return of Captain America, not in the way you would have expected. A lot of rich, creative room comes from that being opened up to us.”

Look for Ross, Krueger and Sadowski to really flex their creative muscles when AVENGERS/INVADERS launches in 2008.

Three of us sat down to watch the “behind-the-scenes” documentary of the new TV show.  Unanimous opinion:it looked cheap, tacky and even Ming The Merciless it seems has to qualify in the Hollywood “must-be-generic” actor type.

Ming The Merciless??  This man looked as though he couldn’t cut into a double-choc Latte without a stunt double.  Watch the free episode? Don’t. Read a book,a magazine but don’t waste your valuable seconds on this planet watching Flush  Flash Gordon!

Oh lordy lordy, here goes another admission that will see my effigy burnt tonight in TV fanland.  I’m not too keen on TVs Heroes series.  Over-long and rapidly losing my interest as the writers try to fit in catch-phrases that will launch a thousand T-shirts [”Save the cheer-leader;save the world”,etc.,etc..] -hey -they admit it!

Anyway, some news for you and,no,I have never seen Veronica Mars either!

“UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – August 20, 2007 – Award-winning, critically acclaimed actress Kristen Bell (”Veronica Mars”) joins NBC’s Emmy Award-nominated ensemble drama “Heroes” for a special multiple episode arc as “Elle,” a sexy, intriguing, mysterious young lady who has ties to Peter’s apparent death, H.R.G.’s past, and Claire’s future. When fans first meet Elle in October, she will commit a terrible crime, but as always with “Heroes,” it will be unclear whose side she is really on. The announcement was made by “Heroes” executive producer/creator Tim Kring, who said: “This was not easy to pull off. But since we’re an ensemble show, with many arcs playing out through the year, we found a way to jump into a small window in her schedule. I pitched her the idea we have for the character, which she loved, and we’re off and running.” “Kristen Bell is a very special actress,” said Universal Media Studios President Katherine Pope. “With so many studios chasing her in both film and TV, we’re beyond delighted that she chose to star on our show. Viewers are going to love her in this role. The depth and complexity that she brings as an actress is a perfect fit for ‘Heroes.’” Most recently, Bell starred for three seasons in the title role of the Joel Silver-produced series “Veronica Mars,” in which she played a smart, fearless apprentice private investigator dedicated to solving her wealthy seaside town’s toughest mysteries. For her role, Bell won a Saturn Award for “Best Actress on Television” and was nominated for two Teen Choice Awards: “Choice Breakout Actress” and “Choice Breakout TV Show.”

She will be seen next in the title role of Judd Apatow’s romantic comedy for Universal, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”; co-stars in The Weinstein Company’s “Fanboys”; and supplies the voice of Marybelle in 20th Century Fox’s animated feature, “Sheepish” — all of which will be released in 2008. In addition, this fall, Bell narrates the new series “Gossip Girl.”

Bell also recently starred in the sci-fi thriller, “Pulse” released by The Weinstein Company in August, 2006, and she played the kidnapped daughter of the President in the David Mamet thriller, “Spartan,” opposite Val Kilmer.

Bell starred in 2004’s camp musical “Reefer Madness” on Showtime, which was based on the hit play, in which she also starred Off-Broadway. Previously, the actress was best-known for her recurring role in the HBO series “Deadwood.” Her television credits also include a lead role in the critically acclaimed made-for-television movie, “Gracie’s Choice,” opposite Anne Heche and Diane Ladd for Lifetime, and guest-starring roles on such series as “American Dreams,” “The Shield” and “Everwood.”

On stage, Bell appeared in the Los Angeles Opera’s all-star production of the Stephen Sondheim musical, “A Little Night Music,” just prior to beginning production on “Veronica Mars.” Previously, she starred in the Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” with Liam Neeson and Laura Linney, the Broadway production of “Tom Sawyer,” and she played the title role in the World Premiere production of the musical “Sneaux.”

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Bell attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She currently lives in Los Angeles.

From creator/writer Tim Kring (”Crossing Jordan”) comes the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated “Heroes,” an epic drama that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities. In its first season, “Heroes” was honored with a People’s Choice Award, an AFI Award, a Multicultural Prism Award and this year’s TV Land Future Classic Award and the TV Critics Association Awards’ Outstanding Program of the Year, as well as nominations at the Golden Globe Awards, NAACP Image Awards, WGA Awards and Satellite Awards. “Heroes” makes its second season debut on Monday, Sept. 24.

Joining Kring as executive producer are Dennis Hammer (”Crossing Jordan”), Allan Arkush (”Crossing Jordan”) and Greg Beeman (”Smallville”). The drama is produced by Universal Media Studios in association with Tailwind Productions”

“Hybrid Bastards!” -no,not something yelled at me as I walk along the street.  Something far less offensive.  I hope!

This is a three issue mini series from Archaia Studios  in which writer Tom Pinchuk and illustrator Kate Glasheen take Greek mythology in a “decidedly different direction”. The series begins in November.

Why am I telling you this?  Because,as long as a certain writer and artist do not get struck by an Olympian thunderbolt,I’m hoping to interview both soon.

So,get ready!
