ALTER EGO#70 100pp $6.95/£4.50
Well, has Alter Ego really gone 70 issues? Obviously,or else what am I reviewing?!
A wonderful Gene “The Dean” Colan cover. How can you go wrong with that? Anyhow, this is a follow up in a way to AE#50 which looked at Editor Roy Thomas’s career in fandom and comics. And this is a superb follow up in which Roy talks about working with the likes of Ross Andru,John and Sal Buscema,Frank Brunner,George Perez and many, many others.
I have to admit that, unlike a certain editor at SBC,I find it fascinating to see photographs of creators! And I think that this is where AE has always excelled. You read comic after comic and think:”I wonder what Gil Kane looked like?” And in AE you find out! Kane,Bill Everett,George Tuska,Sol Brodsky and Frank Robbins et al -all here!
Hmm. Did I mention the superb black and white art within AE? Pencilled, inked, cover reproes from Westerns,Nick Fury Agent Of S.H.I.E.L.D.,and soooo much more. You also have to remember there is the regular Michael T. Gilbert pages and Fawcett Collectors of America[FCA] fanzine within -now at #129.
Interesting to note one big mistake -as far as British comics go:the fact that the US Dennis The Menace appeared on the same date as the British DTM is raised. Its 12th March,1951 for the US DTM but it’s then stated the UK DTM appeared in a comic dated 17th March,1951. So the US was first? Wrong.
Although dated 17th March,as everyone knows, the UK comics were always published a week in advance so both DTMs appeared on 12th!!
That is my only gripe? Yow,I’m getting old. What I cannot understand is that I am,apparently, the only person buys this magazine at Forbidden Planet in Bristol! Buy a copy today or get it put on Standing Order -FP will do it for you!
